Are these things legal? If they are, are they any good?Anyone have any experiences with them, good or bad?Famicom to SNES converters
I assume you're talking about the hookup that latches to the top end loader of the SNES that has two cart ports: one for NES and one for Famicom (allowing you to be able to play these games on the system). If they were illegal, they aren't now because the patent on NES/Famicom is over (hence the Messiah copycat systems), but they may not have been illegal as they just allowed games from the previous gen to play in the next gen and also opened up to imports. As for them working, I had a buddy that owned one and it did work and the retro gaming store by me (in Chicago: on Clark St just south of School) had one of these and we played one of his famicom carts on the SNES. Also remember, though, that there were a bunch of these from various japanese/korean/chinese companies so anything's possible. If someone tries to sell it to you, make sure you have all the pieces to try it first (SNES, famicom cart, adaptor).
