What's the best Mega Man game for someone who has never purchased one?

I have an NES but I feel like I really need a Mega Man game since I never have had one. I am thinking 2 or 3 since those are commonly called the best ones. Also, are there any other good platformers on the NES that I should look into? What's the best Mega Man game for someone who has never purchased one?
Yeah, 2 and 3 are probably the best. What's the best Mega Man game for someone who has never purchased one?
You could skip the NES ones and buy the collections for Xbox, Gamecube, or the PS2, since you'll be getting more for your money's worth, and you'll be getting most of the Mega Man games out there.
Mega Man 2 is definitely the best on the nes. IMO Mega Man X (the letter x, not 10) on the snes is the absolute best in the series.
Just go for the Mega Man Anniversary Collection or X Collection.
If your buying the NES cartridge Megaman 2 and 3 are good choices. The first Mega Man is really awesome, but it's also a pretty short game.
Start from the beginning!
i'm a big fan of 3, so if you ware going to get a nes one and not one of the collections i would get that.
cant go wrong with 2 or 3 for nes, or x for snes
You should get the Anniversary and X collections instead
I think 2 is one of the better games ever made, but either 2 or 3 would be a good place to start. I would agree with picking up the Anniversary collection though.

I would just go for megaman annivercery collection, you get the first 8 classic titles and 2 never releced in amarica. going by the price i paid for my Xbox copy, it retails for 5$.megaman X collection isn't bad either, though i would reccomend the PS2 version here simply because the gambcube controler dosen't lend itself to megaman gameplay.
I second the Anniversary Collection recommendations.

For NES, definitely Mega Man 2.
Megaman 8 or Megaman X 7
