There was an rpg i played that you played as a boy and gathered friends. One i remember was a phoenix, and like a cannoneer. And i remember fighting a Kracken. Anyone have any idea?need help remembering

Yeah that almost sounds like Earthbound or Illusion of Gaia.Both for the SNES.But on illusion of gaia you didnt fight a kracken one of the guys was ate by a fish.But i dont remember the friends on gaia having special powers like you mentioned.
